Reindeers survive in the cold because they eat moss!
Moss is hard to digest and it has little nutritional value. But reindeer fill up on lots of moss because it contains a special chemical that helps them keep their body fluids warm.Â
This chemical acts as a natural antifreeze, keeping the reindeers toasty warm.
- Reindeer and Caribou are the same animal and a member of the deer family.
- Both male and female reindeer grow antlers
- Male reindeer can grow up to 1.2 metres tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 250 kilograms!
- Reindeers sense of sight and hearing aren't great, so they rely mostly on their sense of smell
- When reindeers walk, they click! It's a tendon in their foot passing over the bone.
- Reindeers live in massive herds. Anywhere from 50,000 to 500,000!
- Reindeers can run very fast. Between 36-48 mph (58-77 kmh).
- Reindeers are vegetarians. No meat...mainly lichen, fungi and leaves.
- Reindeers noses are designed to warm the air before it gets to the lungs.
