Description
Kiwi birds cannot fly….makes you wonder why they are called a bird then! Due to their small wings and underdeveloped breast bone, kiwis are unable to fly and so they live in burrows and dens on the forest floor. There are 5 types of Kiwi. Brown Kiwi, Great Spotted Kiwi, Little Spotted Kiwi, Rowi and Tokoeka. The Rowi is the rarest type of Kiwi with only around 450 still alive in New Zealand today.
Kiwis are actually now an endangered species but there are several kiwi sanctuaries and breeding programs throughout New Zealand working toward saving this amazing species.
