Description
Oh how cute is this little tortoise! Tortoises are an ancient species and have been around for 200 million years. That’s longer than lizards, birds, mammals, crocodiles and snakes!
A turtle shell contains 60 interconnected bones. The scales on a tortoise shell are known as ‘scutes’ and are made of the same keratin as human fingernails. A group of tortoises is called a ‘creep’! But they actually prefer to their own company. It is not easier to tell if tortoises are male or female and it’s not until they reach a certain size that it can be easier to tell. Oh and as common with reptiles in general, tortoises use the roof of their mouth to smell.
